What Does Density Do in Minecraft? The Mace Enchantment Explained
What does Density do in Minecraft? It adds 0.5 damage per block fallen, per level, to mace smash attacks. Damage tables, Breach compared, how to get it.
What does Density do in Minecraft? It’s a mace-only enchantment that adds extra damage to smash attacks for every block you fall before the hit lands.
Each level adds 0.5 damage per block fallen, so Density V adds 2.5 per block (Minecraft Wiki, Density page, last edited 19 September 2026).
It does nothing for normal ground hits, and it only works on the mace. This guide applies to Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.52, checked on 7 October 2026.
What does the Density enchantment do in Minecraft?
Density increases a mace’s smash attack damage by 0.5 per level for every block you’ve fallen. A smash attack happens when you hit something with the mace after falling 1.5 blocks or more, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s Mace page.
The mace already deals bonus damage as you fall: +4 for each of the first 3 blocks, +2 for each of the next 5, and +1 for every block after that. Density stacks on top of that.
Normal hits from the ground get no boost. If you swing before you’ve fallen 1.5 blocks, Density does nothing.
Density is an enchantment for the mace, the heavy melee weapon from the Tricky Trials update (1.21). It arrived in snapshot 24w13a, and 24w18a cut it from 1 damage per level to 0.5, per the Wiki’s version history.
How much damage does each Density level add?
Density I adds 0.5 damage per block fallen, and each level after that adds another 0.5, up to 2.5 at Density V. Damage here is in health points, so 2 points equal 1 heart.

How does Density stack with the mace’s own fall damage?
Density is added on top of the mace’s 6 base damage and its built-in fall scaling. The table adds all three together.

Health points before armor, Protection and Resistance, with no critical hit. 2 points = 1 heart. Totals use the Wiki’s base values: 6 base, +4 per block (first 3), +2 per block (next 5), +1 per block after that.
Take a 20-block fall with Density V. The base hit is 6. Fall scaling gives 12 (first 3 blocks), plus 10 (next 5), plus 12 (last 12), which makes 34. Density adds 2.5 x 20 = 50. Total: 90 points, or 45 hearts.
Smash attacks are usually critical hits, and the Wiki says a crit raises both base and smash damage by 50%. Armor and enchantments like Protection then cut the final number.
Past 8 blocks, the mace’s own scaling slows to +1 per block, while Density V keeps adding 2.5. That’s why Density gets better the higher you drop.
At a 3-block fall, Density V adds 7.5 to an 18-point hit. At 30 blocks it adds 75 to a 50-point hit.
Is Density better than Breach?
For drops from height, yes. For close-range fights against armored players, Breach can be the better pick. You can’t put both on one mace.
Breach cuts a target’s armor effectiveness by 15% per level, up to level IV, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s Mace page. It doesn’t need a fall to work.

Density needs height. In caves, Trial Chamber corridors and other low ceilings you’ll rarely get the fall distance. Breach doesn’t care.
Wind Burst fixes the height problem. After a smash it launches you 8 blocks up per level (max level III), so you can chain hits, per the Wiki. Wind charges do the same job from the ground.
How do you get the Density enchantment?
You can get Density from an enchanting table, an enchanted book, or the enchant command in a world with cheats on. In Survival you need a mace first.
1. Get a mace. It’s crafted from a heavy core and a breeze rod. Heavy cores only drop from ominous vaults, at a 7.5% chance, per the Wiki’s Mace page.
2. Put the mace in an enchanting table and check the options. Density is one of the enchantments the table can offer for a mace, but it’s random, so expect to try more than once.
3. Look for a Density book if the table won’t cooperate. The Wiki lists fishing, ominous vaults, and other structures that generate enchanted books.
4. Check librarian villagers. The Wiki says librarians of any level sold Density books until the Villager Trade Rebalance. Whether that still holds on 26.3 is [SOURCE NEEDED], so check a lectern trade in your own world.
5. Combine the book with the mace in an anvil. Two books of the same level merge into the next level, up to Density V.
In Creative, or in a world with cheats on, hold the mace and run /enchant @s density 5.
What enchantments can you combine with Density?
Density is incompatible with Breach, Smite and Bane of Arthropods on a mace, per the Minecraft Wiki.
The Wiki also lists Sharpness and Impaling as incompatible. In Survival no weapon can receive both, so you won’t run into that.
Wind Burst, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking and Mending all work alongside it. The mace has 500 durability on Java, and every attack costs 1.
A Density V mace with Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III and Mending is a sensible Survival setup. That’s our suggestion, not an official build.
Does Density work on Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Density has been in both editions since 1.21, and it behaves the same way: 0.5 damage per block fallen, per level.
The differences are in the mace. On Java, you must take off an equipped elytra before the smash counts. On Bedrock the smash works in elytra flight, and the mace has no attack cooldown (Wiki, Mace page).
Either way, gliding down on an elytra counts as blocks fallen, so a long dive can feed Density a lot of height.
Is Density the same as “density” in Minecraft world generation?
No. The Density enchantment is a combat feature for the mace. “Density function” is a separate technical term for world generation data.
Mojang’s official patch notes for Java Edition 26.3 (15 September 2026) mention density functions in the data pack section, in the context of how terrain noise is calculated. It has no link to the enchantment.
Several pages in the search results claim density controls ore spread, tree counts or block buoyancy. I found no support for that in the 26.3 patch notes or the Wiki’s Density page, so treat those claims as unverified.
When should you recheck these numbers?
Last checked 7 October 2026 on Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52. The Changes section of Mojang’s 26.3 patch notes lists nothing for the mace or Density.
The next drop, 26.4, is already in snapshots. Recheck the per-level values when it ships, since Mojang has changed Density before.
FAQ: Density enchantment in Minecraft
Does Density work on swords, axes or tridents?
No. Density only works on the mace. The Wiki lists the mace as the only item that can receive it.
Can you put Density and Breach on the same mace?
No. Density and Breach are mutually exclusive. On Java the two became incompatible in snapshot 24w19a.
Why do some guides say Density adds 1 damage per level?
Those numbers are out of date. Early builds used 1 damage per level, and the Wiki’s version history shows Java cut it to 0.5 in 24w18a and Bedrock did the same in Preview 1.21.0.24.
Does Density boost normal attacks?
No. Density only adds damage to smash attacks, and the Wiki says normal attacks don’t have their damage increased.
Does Density stop fall damage?
Not on its own. Any mace smash attack that connects lets you land without the fall damage you built up before the hit. If you miss, you take the fall as normal.
