How to Get Honeycomb in Minecraft

Here’s how to get honeycomb in Minecraft: use shears on a bee nest or beehive that has reached honey level 5, and it drops 3 honeycombs.

Honeycomb is a crafting item in Minecraft, the sandbox game from Mojang Studios, and it was added in Java Edition 1.15. According to the Minecraft Wiki (checked October 7, 2026), it makes beehives, candles, and honeycomb blocks, and it waxes copper.

Bees swarm you if you harvest unprepared, so put a lit campfire under the nest first. No bee nest nearby? Trial Chambers chests also hold honeycomb.

Applies to: Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 (both released September 15, 2026). Covers PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Info checked October 7, 2026.

What’s the fastest way to get honeycomb in Minecraft?

How to Get Honeycomb in Minecraft Step by Step

This is the standard survival method, and it works on every platform.

1.     Craft shears. Put two iron ingots in the crafting grid, placed diagonally.

2.     Find a bee nest on an oak or birch tree. The biome table below shows where to look.

3.     Check the honey level. According to the Minecraft Wiki, a nest at honey level 5 changes texture and shows honey oozing out of it.

4.     Place a lit campfire on the ground below the nest. It has to sit within 5 blocks below the nest, with nothing blocking the smoke.

5.     Walk up to the side of the nest. Natural nests face south and bees leave through the front, so stand to the east or west.

6.     Use the shears on the nest. That’s right-click on Java, R2 on PlayStation, RT on Xbox, ZR on Switch, and a tap on mobile.

7.     Pick up the 3 honeycombs that fly out in random directions. The nest resets to honey level 0 and refills on its own.

Where do you find a bee nest in Minecraft?

The most reliable spot is a Meadow, where each eligible tree generates with a bee nest (100%). Natural nests hold 2 to 3 bees and face south, per the Minecraft Wiki.

Forests are a poor bet, so skip them unless you’re already standing in one. Mangrove swamps can also have nests, but guides disagree on the exact chance, so I’ve left it out.

How do you grow your own bee nest?

Plant an oak, birch, or cherry sapling within 2 blocks of a flower on the same level (diagonals count).

The tree has a 5% chance to grow with a nest holding 2 to 3 bees, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

Bone meal speeds up the grind. Expect to repeat it a few times.

How do you move a bee nest to your base?

Break the nest with a Silk Touch tool at night or during rain, when the bees are inside. The nest drops as an item with the bees still in it, and they stay calm, per the Minecraft Wiki.

Place it near flowers at your base. You can also lure bees to a crafted beehive by holding a flower or using a lead.

How do you get honeycomb without angering the bees?

Put a lit campfire under the nest, or let a dispenser do the shearing. Either way, the bees stay calm.

The Minecraft Wiki says a campfire or soul campfire works if it’s within 5 blocks below the nest and the smoke isn’t blocked.

Smoke can pass through one solid block placed directly above the campfire.

Campfire method on Java Edition

Sink the campfire into the ground below the nest and lay a carpet on top. The smoke still calms the bees, and the carpet keeps them from flying into the flames.

Campfire method on Bedrock Edition

On Bedrock, a carpet blocks the smoke, so the Java trick fails. Put the campfire in a hole 4 to 5 blocks below the nest, or fence the hole so animals don’t walk into it.

Dispenser method

Place a dispenser facing the nest, put shears inside, and power it with redstone. The game can’t tell who triggered it, so the bees don’t target you.

Each use costs the shears 1 durability. The honeycombs drop as items, and on Java a hopper under the hive can catch them.

What if you get stung anyway?

A sting poisons you, and the bee that landed it dies about a minute later. A honey bottle cures poison. Poison alone can’t kill you, but the sting damage can, so eat first.

Never break a nest by hand. Without Silk Touch it drops nothing and every bee inside comes for you.

Can you get honeycomb without bees?

Yes. Trial Chambers chests also hold honeycomb. The Minecraft Wiki lists only two natural sources: shearing hives and Trial Chambers loot.

Entrance chest

2 to 8

About 55% per chest

Corridor chest

Trial Chambers are underground and guarded by trial spawners, so bring real armor and food. That’s still safer than a bee swarm for some players.

In Creative mode, search the inventory for honeycomb. With cheats on, type /give @s honeycomb 3 on Java, or /give @s honeycomb 3 0 on Bedrock.

Why isn’t my bee nest filling with honey?

Check these in order, starting with the most common cause.

1.     It’s night or raining. Bees return to the hive and stop working, per the Minecraft Wiki.

2.     There are no flowers nearby. Bees need to pollinate before the honey level rises. Any flower works, including 2-block flowers.

3.     The front is blocked. Bees can only exit through the front of the hive, and only if no solid block covers it.

4.     The bees are gone. A hive holds up to 3 bees, and bees that sting you die. An empty hive never fills.

5.     You’re just early. Each pollinated bee works about 2 minutes inside the hive, and the honey level rises by 1 per trip.

6.     Move it to the Nether or the End. The wiki says bees there leave the hive as soon as the nectar becomes honey, with no day or weather limits.

What do other honeycomb guides get wrong?

Several popular guides we checked in October 2026 still repeat these. Treat them with suspicion.

•       “You get 1 to 3 honeycombs.” A full hive drops 3, per the Minecraft Wiki.

•       “Shear the campfire.” You shear the nest or hive. The campfire is just there for the smoke.

•       “Natural nests need flowers nearby.” The flower rule only applies to trees you grow yourself.

•       “A carpet never works.” It works on Java and breaks the smoke effect on Bedrock.

•       “The only Java and Bedrock difference is where nests spawn.” The carpet and dispenser behavior differ too.

FAQ: honeycomb in Minecraft

How many honeycombs does a beehive give?

A full beehive or bee nest drops 3 honeycombs per harvest, according to the Minecraft Wiki. A dispenser with shears also gets 3.

Can you get honeycomb in Minecraft without bees?

Yes. Trial Chambers entrance and corridor chests can hold 2 to 8 honeycombs. Creative mode and the /give command also work.

Is getting honeycomb different on Bedrock?

Mostly not. The honey level 5 rule and the 3 honeycomb drop are the same. A carpet over the campfire breaks the calming smoke on Bedrock, though.

Can you eat honeycomb in Minecraft?

No. Honeycomb is a crafting and waxing material. Honey bottles are the food item, and they cure poison.

How long does a bee nest take to fill with honey?

There’s no fixed timer. The honey level rises by 1 each time a pollinated bee finishes working, and bees only work in clear daytime. A full hive takes at least 5 bee trips.
