How Long Is a Minecraft Day? Full Day-Night Cycle Breakdown
How long is a Minecraft day? 20 real minutes (24,000 ticks). See day, night, dusk and dawn lengths and how to change day speed on Java.
How long is a Minecraft day? A full day lasts 20 minutes of real time, which is exactly 24,000 game ticks. That runs 72 times faster than a real day, so one real hour gets you three Minecraft days.
Last verified: October 7, 2026. Applies to Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.52, the latest versions listed by the Minecraft Wiki on that date.
Minecraft is Mojang Studios’ sandbox survival game. Its day-night cycle (also called the daylight cycle) controls when hostile mobs spawn and when beds work. The length is the same on Java and Bedrock.
Here’s how the Minecraft Wiki’s Daylight cycle page (last edited October 3, 2026) splits those 20 minutes.
How long is a Minecraft day in real time?
A full Minecraft day is 20 real minutes: 10 minutes of day, 50 seconds of sunset, 8 minutes 20 seconds of night and 50 seconds of sunrise.
The game runs at 20 ticks per second, so 24,000 ticks equals 1,200 seconds. On the in-game clock, tick 0 is 6:00 AM.

Why do some guides say night lasts 7 minutes?
Several popular guides list night as 7 minutes and sunset and sunrise as about 1.5 minutes each. The tick maths doesn’t back that up.
Night runs from tick 13,000 to 23,000. That’s 10,000 ticks, or 500 seconds, which is 8 minutes 20 seconds. Sunset and sunrise are 1,000 ticks each, or 50 seconds.
Shockbyte’s July 2025 guide, for example, prints the 13,000 to 23,000 tick range next to a 7 minute figure. Its numbers still add up to 20 minutes, which is probably why the error sticks around.
Another common claim is 10 minutes of day and 10 minutes of night. That folds sunset and sunrise into the night. It’s a fair rule of thumb, but it isn’t how the game splits the clock.
One more check: at least one top-ranking guide gives 100 days as both 16 hours 36 minutes and 33 hours 20 minutes. Only the second works if you never sleep, because 100 times 20 minutes is 2,000 minutes.
What happens at each point in the 20-minute day?
Real minutes matter less than the moments that change how you play. These are the key ones, per the Minecraft Wiki, in clear weather unless noted.

In clear weather, outdoor hostile spawning runs from tick 13,188 to 22,812. That’s 9,624 ticks, or just over 8 minutes.
How many Minecraft days fit into real time?
Three Minecraft days fit into one real hour, and 72 fit into 24 real hours, as long as you never sleep.

Going the other way, one real second is 72 in-game seconds, and one in-game hour takes 50 real seconds. One real minute covers 1 hour 12 minutes of Minecraft time.
Sleeping cuts the real time, because a bed skips the night. The Passing the Time achievement (play for 100 days) works out to roughly 33 hours of real time without sleeping, per the Minecraft Wiki.
Can you change how long a Minecraft day is?
On Java Edition, yes. Since Java 26.1 you can run /time rate to speed up or slow down the day-night cycle without speeding up the rest of the game.
Bedrock Edition has no equivalent listed on the Minecraft Wiki as of October 2026. Most guides still tell you the day length can’t be changed, and that’s now out of date for Java.
Per Mojang’s official patch notes for Java Edition 26.1 Pre-Release 1, the rate is a multiplier, 1 is normal speed, and any value above 0 up to 1000 works.
The notes say a larger value makes the day-night cycle pass quicker, but the game simulation doesn’t speed up the way it does with /tick rate.
By that logic, /time rate 2 should give you roughly 10-minute days and /time rate 0.5 roughly 40-minute days. That’s our arithmetic from Mojang’s description, not a measured test.
How to use /time rate on Java Edition
1. Make sure commands are enabled in your world. The command needs permission level 2 on Java, per the Minecraft Wiki.
2. Open chat and type /time rate 0.5 for slower days, or /time rate 2 for faster ones.
3. To go back to normal, run /time rate 1.
Other ways to control time
• To freeze the cycle, run /gamerule advance_time false on Java or /gamerule dodaylightcycle false on Bedrock.
• On Java, /time pause and /time resume stop and restart the world clock.
• On both editions, /time set day jumps to tick 1,000, noon to 6,000, night to 13,000 and midnight to 18,000.
• On Java, /tick rate speeds up the whole game, so mobs and crops speed up too.
Bedrock 26.50 added an experimental toggle called Creator World Clocks Features. The wiki lists add, set, pause, resume and query time for its /time of command, and no rate option. It tags the toggle as experimental until Bedrock 26.60, so recheck when that ships.
You may also see guides mention a Daylight Cycle slider under Video Settings, with Longer and Longest options. We couldn’t find it on the Minecraft Wiki’s daylight cycle page or in Mojang’s notes, so treat it as unverified.
What can stretch or pause a Minecraft day?
The 20-minute figure assumes the game holds 20 ticks per second, per the Minecraft Wiki. A server that can’t keep up runs fewer ticks per second, so its days should take longer in real time. That’s our reading of the tick maths.
In singleplayer, opening the game menu pauses the cycle. In multiplayer, time keeps moving as long as the server is running.
The Nether and the End have no day or night, and clocks spin randomly there. The Overworld’s cycle keeps counting while you’re away.
How does sleeping change the Minecraft day?
Sleeping in a bed between dusk and dawn jumps the clock to dawn and sets the weather to clear. In multiplayer, everyone online has to be in bed at the same time unless the playersSleepingPercentage gamerule says otherwise.
The skip only advances the clock. Crops don’t grow and furnaces don’t smelt during it, per the Minecraft Wiki.
Phantoms start showing up after three in-game days without sleeping, which is 72,000 ticks, according to Beebom’s guide. In real time, that’s one hour.
How do you check the time in Minecraft?
Craft a clock from four gold ingots in a diamond shape around one redstone dust, per Beebom. You can also find one in ruined portal and shipwreck chests.
A clock is most useful underground, where you can’t see the sun. It spins randomly in the Nether and the End.
For exact numbers, use /time query. The Minecraft Wiki lists /time query time for Java 26.x and /time query daytime for Bedrock.
Minecraft day length FAQ
How long is a Minecraft day in real time?
A Minecraft day is 20 minutes of real time, or 24,000 ticks at 20 ticks per second. That’s 10 minutes of day, 50 seconds of sunset, 8 minutes 20 seconds of night and 50 seconds of sunrise.
How long is night in Minecraft?
The night phase lasts 8 minutes 20 seconds (ticks 13,000 to 23,000). In clear weather, hostile mobs can spawn outdoors for just over 8 minutes of that, from tick 13,188 to 22,812.
How many Minecraft days are in a real hour?
Three, if you never sleep. A full 24 real hours holds 72 Minecraft days.
Can you make a Minecraft day longer?
On Java Edition, yes. /time rate with a value below 1 slows the cycle, and /time pause or /gamerule advance_time false stops it. Bedrock lists no rate command, but /gamerule dodaylightcycle false freezes time.
How many ticks are in a Minecraft day?
24,000. Tick 0 is 6:00 AM, tick 12,000 is sunset and tick 13,000 is when night begins.
