Ancient Debris in Minecraft: Where to Find It and How to Mine It
Ancient debris in Minecraft peaks near Y=16 in Java. See where to mine it, the fastest methods, and how much you need. Checked for 26.3.
Ancient debris in Minecraft is a rare Nether ore that appears most often around Y=16 in Java Edition, and only a diamond or netherite pickaxe will collect it.
It is the main source of netherite scrap, the material behind netherite gear. According to the Minecraft Wiki (checked 7 October 2026), it never generates exposed to air, so you have to dig for it.
Applies to: Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 (released 15 September 2026) and current Bedrock Edition (26.5x series). [SOURCE NEEDED: confirm the exact current Bedrock build on Mojang’s Bedrock changelog]
Platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile. Info checked 7 October 2026.
Below you’ll find the best Y level, five ways to mine it, how much you need, and what changed in 2026.
What are the key facts about ancient debris?
|
Question |
Answer |
|
Where does it generate? |
The Nether only. It replaces netherrack in every edition, plus basalt and blackstone in Java. |
|
Best Y level in Java? |
Y=16 on average. Tunnel at Y=15 for bed and TNT methods. |
|
Full Y range? |
Y 8 to 119. Most of it sits between Y 8 and 24 in Java and Y 8 and 23 in Bedrock. |
|
What tool do you need? |
A diamond or netherite pickaxe. Any other tool breaks it and drops nothing. |
|
Hardness and blast resistance? |
30 and 1,200. It survives normal explosions. |
|
What does it smelt into? |
1 netherite scrap and 2 XP, in a furnace or blast furnace. |
|
Does Fortune help? |
No. |
|
Does fire or lava destroy it? |
No. It does not burn, and the item floats on lava. |
|
Is it renewable? |
No. |
|
How much per chunk (Java)? |
About 1.6 on average, with a normal maximum of 5. The wiki flags the average as needing testing. |

What does ancient debris do in Minecraft?
Ancient debris smelts into netherite scrap. Four scraps plus four gold ingots craft one netherite ingot, according to the Minecraft Wiki.
A netherite ingot then upgrades diamond gear at a smithing table, together with a Netherite Upgrade smithing template. Enchantments carry over to the upgraded item.
Mojang’s Block of the Week post (11 November 2021) describes the block as corroded metal plates holding small amounts of netherite.
It also notes the item survives lava, so a death in the Nether won’t cost you the debris.
Redstone builders use it too. It resists TNT but pistons can move it, which suits tunnel bore machines, per the wiki.
What is the best Y level for ancient debris?
In Java Edition, Y=16 has the most ancient debris on average, according to the Minecraft Wiki. For bed and TNT mining, the wiki’s mining tutorial says to tunnel at Y=15.
Plenty of guides say Y=14 or Y=15 instead. All three layers are close, so don’t burn an hour arguing over one block of height.
The numbers come from how the game places debris in clusters. Java and Bedrock use different rules:
|
Edition |
First batch of clusters |
Second batch of clusters |
|
Java |
One cluster of 0 to 3 blocks, triangle distribution from Y 8 to 24 (peaks at 16) |
One cluster of 0 to 2 blocks, spread evenly from Y 8 to 119 |
|
Bedrock |
Two clusters of 0 to 3 blocks, spread evenly from Y 8 to 23 |
Three clusters of 0 to 2 blocks, spread evenly from Y 8 to 119 |
Bedrock’s main clusters are flat across Y 8 to 23, so by the wiki’s figures there is no single best layer there. Anywhere in that band works.
That is our reading of the wiki’s numbers, not a tested result.
Lower is safer. The wiki’s tutorial says digging lower reduces the chance of breaking into a lava ocean.
How do you get to the right level?
1. Enter the Nether. Build a portal. GamesRadar (updated November 2024) says to mine at least 10 blocks of obsidian for the frame.
2. Turn on coordinates. Press F3 on Java. On Bedrock, switch on Show Coordinates in the world settings.
3. Record your portal’s location. One Nether block equals eight Overworld blocks, per the wiki, so a replacement portal can drop you far from home.
4. Dig down in a staircase. TheGamer (July 2023) advises against mining straight down, because you can land in lava.
5. Level out at Y=15 or Y=16 and start one of the methods below.
What to bring, according to the wiki’s tutorial:
• A diamond pickaxe with Efficiency II or better, which breaks netherrack instantly
• Mending and Unbreaking III on it, so the quartz and nether gold ore you hit along the way repair the pick
• Several potions of Fire Resistance
• Protection IV armor if you have it
• A spare building block for plugging lava (the wiki suggests keeping one in your off-hand on Java)

Java commands only as written below |
Branch mining
Tunnel in one direction until you hit lava, then turn. The wiki says an instant-mining pickaxe clears about 12 blocks per second this way, using only tools and food.
Mine around every debris block you find. A vein holds at most 3 blocks, but if two debris blocks have two or more blocks between them, they belong to separate veins, per the wiki.
Bed mining
Beds explode in the Nether with a bigger blast than TNT, and ancient debris survives the blast. The wiki lists this method as easy because you mine very little.
1. Tunnel down to Y=15.
2. Craft a stack of beds. Keep chests and barrels away from nearby piglins, because storing items in them can anger the piglins, per the wiki.
3. Dig a main tunnel. Every 16th block, cut a 1 by 1 by 5 side tunnel at eye level.
4. Place a bed at the end of a side tunnel, position yourself carefully, then use the bed.
5. Check the blast zone. The wiki says up to 3 debris blocks can show up per blast.
Bed blasts hurt at close range. The wiki suggests Totems of Undying, Blast Protection armor and Fire Resistance potions, and says none are required.
Use normal beds. Per the official Java 26.3 patch notes, a Straw Bed cannot be used in the Nether and is destroyed if you try. The notes do not mention an explosion.
TNT mining
Dig a strip tunnel around Y=14 to 16. Place TNT on every other block, light the end, and run. Netherrack disappears and the debris stays.
One TNT block takes five gunpowder and four sand, per TheGamer (July 2023). Watch for lava the blasts release.
Lava X-ray
Debris can generate under lava, where you can see it without digging. The wiki says to drink Fire Resistance, swim in the lava, and set your FOV to 30 to see through it.
It only finds a few blocks. Treat it as a quick top-up, not a main method.
Scouting a copy of your world
This needs a cheats-on copy of your world. Fly through the Nether in Spectator mode and clear a block of netherrack with the command below, as described on the wiki.
/fill ~10 ~10 ~10 ~-10 ~-10 ~-10 air replace netherrack
Switch to Creative, block off the lava, and write down any debris coordinates. Then dig straight to them in your real world. The command is written for Java.
Ghasts and the Wither
Both can blast netherrack away. The wiki warns that blue Wither skulls can also break ancient debris, so this method can destroy what you came for.
Which ancient debris tips are myths?
Some popular advice doesn’t hold up against the wiki’s numbers.
Chunk-border mining. The wiki’s mining tutorial says mining along chunk borders does not find more debris. Some guides still recommend it, including the F3 + G trick. Skip it.
A vein that crosses a border is balanced by a vein that cannot cross back, and you see fewer blocks per chunk.
Fortune. It adds nothing. The wiki’s drop rules list a plain self-drop for diamond and netherite pickaxes, and Wikibooks’ ancient debris page says Fortune has no effect.
One perfect layer on Bedrock. Guides that tell Bedrock players to hit Y=15 aren’t wrong, but by the wiki’s figures Y=15 is no better than other layers from Y 8 to 23.
Can you get ancient debris without mining?
Yes, but only from bastion remnant chests in the Nether. Mojang’s post calls bastions a faster but more dangerous source, because piglins and hoglins guard them.
Each chest rolls for one debris and for a stack of two separately. These chances are from the Minecraft Wiki, checked 7 October 2026:

Bastion chests can also hold netherite scrap, netherite ingots and the Netherite Upgrade template. Shockbyte’s guide (8 July 2025) advises wearing gold armor so piglins don’t attack on sight.
How many ancient debris do you need for netherite gear?
You need four ancient debris per netherite ingot, so a full set of netherite armor and tools (nine ingots) costs 36 debris. Each ingot also uses four gold ingots.

Older guides miss the newer items. Netherite spears and nautilus armor came in Java snapshot 25w41a for 1.21.11 (Mounts of Mayhem, December 2025), and netherite horse armor followed in 25w45a, per the Minecraft Wiki’s ingot page.
Every upgrade also needs a Netherite Upgrade smithing template. It is used up each time, and one template plus 7 diamonds and 1 netherrack makes two.
By our maths, nine upgrades starting from one found template cost 56 diamonds. [SOURCE NEEDED: confirm the recipe and that the template is consumed on the Minecraft Wiki smithing template page]
What changed for ancient debris in 2026?
Java 26.2 (Chaos Cubed, 16 June 2026) added sulfur cubes, which can absorb ancient debris to change how they bounce, per the wiki’s history for the block. It is a mob mechanic, not a new source of debris.
Java 26.3 (15 September 2026) added Straw Beds, which don’t work for bed mining, as covered above. Stick with normal beds.
Generation has not changed. The wiki’s history for the block lists no change to where it generates since the 1.16 Nether Update. We have not re-tested the bed method on 26.3, though the wiki’s tutorial still lists it.
Two things are coming. Java 26.4 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 with ice caves, per the wiki’s planned versions page.
Mojang also announced a new dimension, The Sift, for 2027 at Minecraft LIVE on 26 September 2026, as reported by GoSuGamers.
We found nothing confirming that either one changes ancient debris. Treat claims that they do as rumours until Mojang says otherwise.
FAQ
What is the best Y level for ancient debris in Minecraft?
In Java Edition, Y=16 has the most ancient debris on average, and the wiki’s tutorial recommends tunnelling at Y=15.
In Bedrock, the main clusters are spread evenly from Y 8 to 23, so any layer in that band works.
What pickaxe do you need to mine ancient debris?
A diamond or netherite pickaxe. Any other tool breaks the block but drops nothing.
On Java, a diamond pickaxe with no enchantments takes about 15.65 seconds per block, and about 5.65 seconds on Bedrock, per the wiki’s breaking table.
Does Fortune increase ancient debris drops?
No. Ancient debris drops itself, one block per block mined, and Fortune does not change that.
How many ancient debris do you need for full netherite armor?
You need 16. Each armor piece takes one netherite ingot, and each ingot takes four ancient debris smelted into four netherite scraps.
Is ancient debris renewable?
No. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as non-renewable. Exploring unexplored Nether chunks and looting bastion chests are the ways to find more.
