Minecraft House Designs That Work in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50
Minecraft house designs for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50: starter shelters, survival bases and looks-first builds, plus what concrete stairs change.
The best Minecraft house designs for most players are a cliffside hideout for night one, a raised survival farmhouse for week one, and a cottage or concrete build once your chests are full.
Minecraft is a sandbox survival game from Mojang Studios in which you build everything out of blocks. This guide applies to Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, which both launched with the Wilderness Bound drop on 15 September 2026.
Most house lists are a stack of video links. This one gives you a shortlist, the blocks each build needs, and what the new concrete stairs and slabs change. Last checked 7 October 2026.
What are the best Minecraft house designs?
The best all-round Minecraft house designs are the cliffside hideout, the raised survival farmhouse and the treehouse. All three use cheap early blocks, and each keeps ground mobs away from your bed.
Match a design to your biome, your block stock and your patience using the table. Effort is our own rating: Quick means you can finish it in the first in-game day, Medium takes a few days, and Long is a real project.

How were these Minecraft house designs chosen?
We ranked for survival first and looks second. The criteria were build speed, how common the blocks are, protection from mobs, storage space and how good the finished house looks.
The picks reflect Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, checked on 7 October 2026. Block facts come from Mojang’s official patch notes.
Design ideas draw on published guides from PC Gamer (updated 14 August 2025), GamesRadar (18 June 2026), Dexerto (1 October 2026), Beebom (2 September 2026) and Plarium (13 January 2026).
This is a research-based guide, not a hands-on test. We have not playtested these builds on 26.3, so check a recipe in your own world before you gather materials.
What is the best Minecraft house design for your first night?
A cliffside hideout is the safest first-night house, because the hill already supplies the back, sides and roof. You only build the front.
Cliffside hideout
Cut a 3×3 space into a hillside, two or three blocks high, then seal the front with a door and glass or planks. GamesRadar calls this its most recommended first-night idea and says the glass front needs only six blocks of sand.
Expand sideways into the hill later. Beebom’s Hobbit Hole, which asks for a hillside footprint of 13×10 blocks, is the natural upgrade.
Tent
A tent is a few planks, some wool and a campfire. Dexerto’s Wilderness Bound list has a large tent build for forest seeds, and GamesRadar lists a wooden tent as a day-one option.
Add a fence or walls, because Plarium points out an open tent does little to keep mobs out. In 26.3 you can also sit on a cushion and sleep on a straw bed inside it.
Starter cabin
Build a plain box with a pitched roof, then reskin it for your biome. GamesRadar’s 5×5 house guide says you can swap almost every exterior block to match what you have.
Use planks and logs of any wood, glass panes and a door. Same layout, different materials, so it is the best template to learn on.
What is the best Minecraft house design for survival mode?
The raised survival farmhouse is the best long-term survival design, because crops, crafting and storage sit under one roof.
Raised survival farmhouse
Put the bed and chests upstairs, with the crafting table, furnaces and a small crop plot below or beside it. PC Gamer describes SheepGG’s version with a crafting and growing area underneath the house.
Beebom lists a survival farmhouse as an easy pick with the farm built in, though it needs plenty of wood.
Treehouse
Elevation is the point. Beebom credits treehouses with extra protection from ground mobs, and PC Gamer shows jungle versions built around the trunk with a lookout on every side.
Wood burns, so keep campfires and open flames away from the build. Beebom lists fire risk as the log cabin’s drawback.
Lake house on stilts
Stilts over shallow water give you easy fishing and a dock for boats. Beebom flags the trade-off: Drowned can show up nearby.
Beebom suggests swamp ponds, where the water is shallow, to reduce that risk.
Mine-entrance house
Pair a cozy upper floor with a ground-level workshop that opens into a mine shaft. GamesRadar and PC Gamer both feature Foxel’s starter house, which uses stone and oak and puts crafting, storage, brewing and enchanting by the shaft.
GamesRadar says it only has a small plant plot inside, so add farms behind it.
Underground house
Dig down instead of building up, and let skylights handle some of the lighting. Beebom’s how-to suggests a mountainside cave as the site and clearing at least 6 to 8 blocks in every direction.
Light it well, because Beebom warns caves are prone to mob spawning.
Which Minecraft house designs look the best?
For looks, cottages, cherry-wood houses and modern concrete builds give the most payoff per block. Version 26.3 adds concrete stairs and slabs, which give modern builds new shapes to work with.
Cottage
A cottage mixes timber, stone bricks and flowers, and a steep roof does most of the work. GamesRadar’s cottage picks lean on cherry wood, brick and pale oak.
Mix two or three similar wall blocks so the surface doesn’t read as flat.
Cherry-wood house
Cherry Grove builds pair pink planks with dark roof accents and lanterns. PC Gamer’s SheepGG pick uses deep slate roof trim and a small moat.
Beebom rates its Japanese Pagoda build Hard and says it needs Overworld and Nether blocks, so try it in Creative first.
Medieval stone house
Stone bricks, dark oak and lanterns make the classic medieval look. Beebom rates its medieval castle Hard and recommends Creative mode.
GamesRadar points to a small castle that is big enough to impress and small enough to finish.
Modern concrete house
Flat roofs, big glass walls and white or gray concrete define the style. PC Gamer’s modern picks lean on quartz, and Beebom’s minimalist build mixes concrete, prismarine and glass.
Mojang’s 26.3 patch notes add a stair and a slab for every colored concrete block. That means stepped facades and thin floor edges without switching to another material.
Poplar cabin
Poplar is a new wood set in 26.3, and its leaves come in red, orange and yellow. Mojang’s notes say poplar trees grow in the Dappled Forest, a biome found near cold biomes, and the Wandering Trader sells saplings.
Plant saplings beside the house for color. Mojang says each sapling grows into one of the three leaf colors at random. Older guides predate this palette.
Pale oak manor
Pale oak gives you a bone-white wood. PC Gamer’s pale oak house starts with a blackstone foundation and leans on stripped pale oak logs.
GamesRadar notes pale oak comes from one of the rarest biomes, the Pale Garden, so plan a trip before you build.
Can you build a Minecraft house underwater or in the Nether?
A sealed underwater base works as a real home. A Nether house works only as a storage outpost, because you can’t sleep in the Nether.
Underwater glass base
Seal the walls first, then deal with light. Beebom rates the underwater base Medium and says darkness at depth is the main problem, suggesting a conduit and Potions of Night Vision.
Beebom’s glass version lists glass blocks, white concrete, planks and sea lanterns.
Nether outpost
Beebom notes regular beds explode in the Nether, and Mojang’s 26.3 notes say a straw bed is destroyed if you try to sleep on it in the Nether or the End. Beebom suggests several portals, each with a bed and chest on the Overworld end.
What does Minecraft 26.3 change for house building?
Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 add concrete stairs and slabs, wool stairs and slabs, cushions, straw beds and a poplar wood set. According to Mojang’s Java patch notes, 26.3 shipped on 15 September 2026.
The Minecraft Wiki’s Wilderness Bound page lists Bedrock 26.50 as the same drop, released the same day.

A new autumn palette for cabins. |
|
Abandoned Camps |

Loot near your build site. Not a house. |
The straw bed is the most useful item for builders. Carry a few to a distant build site, skip the night, and your respawn point stays at home.
It breaks after one use, so treat it as a travel tool, not a replacement for a regular bed. Cushions also break if the block under them is removed.
How do you stop mobs spawning inside your Minecraft house?
Light every interior block. According to the Java 1.18 patch notes (30 November 2021), most hostile Overworld mobs spawn only where block light is 0, so any light source that reaches a spot stops spawns there.
The Minecraft Wiki’s light page lists the same rule for Bedrock from 1.18.0. The Nether and mob spawners follow different rules. Use this checklist:
• Light corners, lofts, attics and basements. Those are the usual leaks.
• Light the ground and roof outside too, since mobs spawn out there and walk to your door.
• Keep open flames and lava away from wooden walls.
• Plarium suggests a lightning rod for wood-heavy houses in Survival.
How big should a Minecraft house be?
Minecraft has no official house size. As our own rule of thumb, a 5×5 interior fits a bed, crafting table, furnace and a couple of chests, and a 9×9 interior gives you room to move.
For scale, Beebom’s published footprints run from 9×7 for its brick starter house to 40×40 for its space base. Mark your footprint with scaffolding or dirt before you spend resources.
How do you stop a Minecraft house looking like a box?
Use three block types in different roles, add depth with stairs, slabs and trapdoors, and break the outline with a roof overhang or an extra wing.
Try a 60-30-10 split as a starting ratio: 60 percent main wall block, 30 percent secondary block for base and corners, 10 percent accent. It is a general design rule, not a Minecraft setting.
Recess windows by one block, add trapdoor shutters and use stairs for eaves. GamesRadar recommends a gradient guide by Unnamed for mixing similar blocks, and a Hermit B-Dubz video for splitting interiors into rooms.
Step back often, which Plarium lists among its building tips. In 26.3, wool slabs and cushions add cheap furniture to an empty room.
How do you build a basic Minecraft house, step by step?
Mark the footprint, raise the walls, close the roof, add a door and windows, light every interior block, then furnish. These six steps work on Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50.
1. Pick a flat site near wood, water and stone. Beebom’s checklist also asks for open space, food sources and some altitude.
2. Mark the footprint with scaffolding or dirt. A 7×7 outline gives you a 5×5 interior once the walls go up.
3. Raise the walls at least three blocks high, leaving gaps for a door and windows.
4. Close the roof with stairs and slabs so nothing can walk in from above.
5. Place a door and glass panes, then put a light source on every interior block.
6. Furnish it with a bed, crafting table, furnace and chests. A regular bed sets your respawn point. A straw bed does not.
Minecraft house designs FAQ
What is the easiest Minecraft house to build?
The cliffside hideout is the easiest, because you only build the front wall. Beebom’s own list names the Hobbit Hole, Treehouse and Cozy Bamboo House as its easy picks.
Does Minecraft 26.3 have concrete stairs and slabs?
Yes. Mojang’s Java 26.3 patch notes (15 September 2026) add a stair and a slab for each colored concrete block, and both can be made in a Stonecutter. Bedrock 26.50 has them too, per the Minecraft Wiki.
Do these Minecraft house designs work on Bedrock?
Yes. Wilderness Bound reached both editions on 15 September 2026 as Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50, so the block lists here apply to both. The version numbers differ by design.
Can I sleep at a build site without resetting my spawn point?
Yes, with a straw bed. Mojang’s notes say it lets you sleep through the night without setting your spawn, works once, and is destroyed if used in the Nether or the End.
Where can I find Minecraft house blueprints?
Minecraft has no official blueprint library. Plarium notes there are no official build-planning tools, so most players follow video tutorials from creators such as Zaypixel, ItsMarloe and SheepGG, whose builds appear in PC Gamer and GamesRadar guides.
