Minecraft Steve: Who He Is and Everything We Know

Minecraft Steve is the original default player skin in Minecraft, created by Markus “Notch” Persson for the first Java version in 2009. He has no official backstory, no dialogue and no canon job. He is the player.

Minecraft is the sandbox game from Mojang Studios, now owned by Microsoft. Steve wears a light blue top, blue trousers and shoes, and he is one of nine default skins.

Who is Steve in Minecraft?

Steve is the default look of the player character, the one you control in every mode. Critics and promo material treat him as the franchise mascot, even though the game never tells his story.

In July 2012, Persson wrote that the model was meant to be a genderless human being. That is why Steve works as a blank slate instead of a hero with a personality.

How did Steve get his name?

Persson came up with “Steve” as a joke because the name felt generic, and the community kept using it.

Mojang later made it official in Bedrock Edition, according to PC Gamer’s December 2020 feature on the character.

Early on, the name was sometimes written “Steve?” to show the uncertainty. A few sites give exact dates for that. We couldn’t check any of them against Mojang or Persson’s own posts, so we’re not repeating them.

What does Steve look like, and has his design changed?

Steve has a light blue top, blue trousers and shoes. Eurogamer reported in August 2022 that his redesign brought back a goatee he had lost more than a decade earlier.

What is the difference between Steve and Alex?

Steve uses the classic model with 4-pixel-wide arms. Alex uses the slim model with 3-pixel-wide arms and has an orange ponytail.

That last row comes from LEGO Club Magazine, as reported by PC Gamer in 2020. It is merchandise lore, so don’t treat it as in-game canon.

How many default skins does Minecraft have?

Nine. Steve and Alex are joined by Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai and Efe, which Mojang added in October 2022 (PCGamesN, October 24, 2022).

Each one uses either the classic or the slim model. If you haven’t set a custom skin, the Minecraft Wiki says the game assigns one based on your account ID.

How do I play as Steve in Minecraft?

Pick Steve from the default skins in the Java Edition launcher or the Bedrock Edition Dressing Room.

Menu labels have shifted between drops, so match them to what you see in your current version.

Java Edition (Windows, Mac, Linux)

1.     Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition.

2.     Click Skins at the top of the launcher.

3.     Pick Steve from the default skins, then click Use.

4.     Launch the game and check the skin in the preview.

Bedrock Edition (Windows, console, mobile)

1.     From the main menu, open Dressing Room.

2.     Edit a character slot and choose your base skin from the Minecraft default skins (PCGamesN skin guide).

3.     Select Steve and save the character.

Importing your own PNG skin on Bedrock works on PC only, according to PCGamesN’s skin guide.

How tall is Steve, and how fast does he move?

We found no official height from Mojang. PC Gamer’s 2020 feature estimated Steve at around six feet tall, moving at 4.7 km/h sneaking, 15.5 km/h walking and 20.2 km/h sprinting.

Treat those as fun conversions, not official stats.

Is Steve in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Yes. Steve joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch as a DLC fighter on October 13, 2020, with Alex, Zombie and Enderman as alternate costumes (Nintendo presentation, October 3, 2020, as reported by iMore and Gematsu).

He mines blocks, then summons a crafting table to make stronger weapons, according to Upcomer’s coverage of the reveal.

Competitive players pushed hard for a ban. Kotaku reported on March 3, 2023 that several tournaments banned Steve after a technique called the “Phantom MLG” surfaced. Tournament rules change, so check your organizer’s current ruleset.

Who plays Steve in A Minecraft Movie?

Jack Black plays Steve in A Minecraft Movie, released in April 2025. The announced US release date was April 4, per PCGamesN’s coverage of the first trailer.

In the film, Steve is an expert crafter who guides four misfits through the Overworld (Warner Bros. synopsis, via PCGamesN). IGN reported in March 2025 that Black was originally going to play a talking pig.

SuperHeroHype reported the film grossed over $950 million worldwide. Alex appears in the post-credits scene, with Kate McKinnon providing an uncredited voice cameo (Entertainment Weekly cast guide).

The sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is set for July 23, 2027, and Kirsten Dunst is cast as Alex (NME; Khaleej Times, May 31, 2026).

Unconfirmed: NME reports that fans think Matt Berry will play Herobrine after a behind-the-scenes clip. That is speculation. We found no studio confirmation.
