Aqua Affinity Minecraft: What It Does and How to Get It
Aqua Affinity Minecraft removes the underwater mining penalty. Learn how to get it, why mining can still feel slow, and what Java 26.3 changed.
Applies to: Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.52. Information checked October 7, 2026.
Aqua Affinity is a helmet enchantment in Minecraft that removes the mining slowdown you get when your head is underwater.
With it equipped, blocks break at the speed they would on land.
You can get the Aqua Affinity Minecraft enchantment from an enchanting table, an enchanted book, or a librarian villager.
It has one level, so there’s nothing to upgrade.
One catch: it doesn’t remove the separate penalty for floating. The fix is below.
Aqua Affinity Minecraft quick facts
Aqua Affinity is a one-level helmet enchantment that Java Edition added in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

What does Aqua Affinity do in Minecraft?
Aqua Affinity cancels the 5x mining slowdown that applies when your head is underwater. It works the moment you wear the helmet, with nothing to switch on.
According to the Minecraft Wiki, the enchantment grants 400% submerged mining speed, which offsets the penalty. It doesn’t give you air, swim speed, or extra damage.
That makes it useful for clearing ocean monuments, digging tunnels under water, and building underwater bases. If you only make short trips for loot, you’ll barely notice it.
Why is mining still slow underwater with Aqua Affinity?
Because floating is a separate penalty, and Aqua Affinity doesn’t touch it. The Minecraft Wiki says mining while underwater and floating takes 25 times as long as mining on dry ground without the enchantment.

Use this routine to get full speed:
1. Swim down to the seabed, or place a block and stand on it.
2. Mine from solid footing, not while swimming.
3. Working up a tall wall? Place a block under your feet before you mine the next one.
How do you get Aqua Affinity in Minecraft?
The fastest way is an enchanting table: put in a helmet and lapis lazuli, then check whether Aqua Affinity shows in the offers. If it doesn’t, reroll the offers or use a librarian.
Method 1: Enchanting table
1. Put a helmet or turtle shell in the left slot of the enchanting table and lapis lazuli in the right slot.
2. Hover over the three offers and look for Aqua Affinity in the hint text.
3. No luck? Enchant a throwaway item to refresh the offers, then try the helmet again (a trick Twinfinite covers in its July 2026 guide).
4. Pick the offer and pay the lapis and XP levels.
You don’t need bookshelves to see it offered. Beebom’s guide says so, and the Minecraft Wiki lists a minimum enchanting cost of 1 for Aqua Affinity. Stronger helmet enchantments need more bookshelves.
Method 2: Librarian villagers
Trading is the most reliable method once you have a villager set up. Aqua Affinity I costs 5 to 19 emeralds plus a book, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s librarian page (checked October 2026).
1. Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager so they become a librarian.
2. Open the trade menu and check the enchanted book offers.
3. If Aqua Affinity isn’t there and you haven’t traded yet, break and replace the lectern to reroll.
4. Buy the book, then apply it at an anvil.
By default, each enchanted book trade picks a random enchantment, so expect a few rerolls. The wiki says Soul Speed, Swift Sneak, and Wind Burst are excluded.
Does the Villager Trade Rebalance change where Aqua Affinity comes from?
Only if you turned the experiment on. The Minecraft Wiki says Villager Trade Rebalance isn’t enabled by default in Java or Bedrock.
With it on, Aqua Affinity sits in the common book pool for Snowy librarians, next to Looting and Frost Walker. Treat that as an experiment-only route.
Method 3: Enchanted books from loot
Aqua Affinity books can turn up in chests. The Minecraft Wiki lists desert pyramids, strongholds, ocean ruins, ancient cities, woodland mansions, pillager outposts, mineshafts, monster rooms, jungle pyramids, and vaults in trial chambers.
The wiki also lists fishing and raid-mob drops but notes an edition difference for one of them, so don’t count on those.
To apply a book:
1. Put the helmet in the left anvil slot.
2. Put the Aqua Affinity book in the right slot.
3. Take the result from the output slot. It costs XP levels.
Twinfinite warns that merging many books onto one helmet raises the anvil’s prior work penalty. Plan your merges before you start.
Method 4: Command (creative worlds and testing)
Hold a helmet and run /enchant @s aqua_affinity 1 with cheats on. The identifier is aqua_affinity in both editions, per the Minecraft Wiki.
One guide still posts a /give command that it says was tested on version 1.18. Don’t trust old item syntax on 26.3 without testing it.
Which items can you put Aqua Affinity on?
Any helmet and the turtle shell. The Minecraft Wiki lists helmets and turtle shells as the primary items, so an enchanting table can roll it on them directly.

Since Java snapshot 24w18a (1.21), the effect only works when the item sits in the head slot.
Put it on the best helmet you have. ExitLag’s May 2026 guide pairs it with Respiration III, Unbreaking III, Mending, and Protection IV.
Aqua Affinity vs Respiration: which one should you pick?
Both, if you can. Aqua Affinity speeds up mining, and Respiration gives you more time before you start drowning. Beebom confirms the two can share a helmet.

Other air sources work too. A Water Breathing potion does the job, and a powered conduit gives Conduit Power, which includes water breathing and a Haste-style boost underwater. [SOURCE NEEDED: confirm Conduit Power details on the current wiki page]
Is Aqua Affinity worth it?
Yes, if you mine or build underwater regularly. It costs one enchantment, has no levels to chase, and the speed difference shows up in your first few blocks.
Skip it if you stay inland or only make short trips for loot. In that case Respiration or a potion helps more.
Already finished your helmet? A book and an anvil can add Aqua Affinity later, as long as the helmet hasn’t racked up too much prior work.
Has Aqua Affinity changed in recent updates?
Not recently. The Minecraft Wiki’s version history lists no Aqua Affinity changes after Java snapshot 24w18a, and no 26.x entries, as of October 7, 2026.
• Java 1.9 (15w42a): “Aqua Affinity I” was renamed to “Aqua Affinity”.
• Java 1.13 (18w07a): turtle shells can receive it.
• Java 1.21 (24w18a): the speed boost shows in the item tooltip, scales at 400% per level instead of a fixed value, and only works in the head slot.
Java 26.4 is in snapshots, with 26.4 Snapshot 2 listed as the dev build. Recheck this page after it ships.
What do other Aqua Affinity guides get wrong?
Search results for this topic include scraped pages and a few errors from bigger sites. These claims don’t match the Minecraft Wiki.
• It isn’t a potion. Some results describe an Aqua Affinity potion, but the wiki lists only helmets and turtle shells as items that can carry it.
• It doesn’t go on tools. At least one guide tells readers to enchant an axe with it. It’s head slot only.
• It isn’t a 2x boost, and you don’t craft it with a Netherite Ingot. Both claims show up on low-quality pages, and the wiki lists neither.
• The Snowy-librarian-only claim needs an experiment turned on. Twinfinite’s July 2026 guide reads as if it applies by default, but the wiki says it doesn’t.
Aqua Affinity Minecraft FAQ
Is there an Aqua Affinity 2 in Minecraft?
No. Aqua Affinity tops out at level I in Survival. With commands, Java Edition adds 400% submerged mining speed per extra level, while Bedrock Edition shows no change, per the Minecraft Wiki.
Can you put Aqua Affinity on a pickaxe or chestplate?
No. It only goes on helmets and turtle shells, and it only works in the head slot.
Does Aqua Affinity help you breathe underwater?
No. It only affects mining speed. Use Respiration, a Water Breathing potion, or a conduit for air.
Does Aqua Affinity work in Bedrock Edition?
Yes. Bedrock has had it since Pocket Edition Alpha v0.12.1, and the identifier is aqua_affinity (numeric ID 8). Extra levels do nothing in Bedrock.
Does Aqua Affinity work while you’re swimming?
Partly. It cancels the 5x submerged penalty but not the 5x floating penalty, so you still mine 5 times slower than on land. Stand on a block to fix it.
