What Do Horses Eat in Minecraft? Every Food and What It Does

What do horses eat in Minecraft? Horses eat sugar, wheat, apples, carrots, golden carrots, golden apples, enchanted golden apples and hay bales.

A horse is a passive, rideable mob that spawns in plains and savanna biomes, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

Hay bales heal the most (20 HP, or 10 hearts). Golden apples add the most taming temper (+10). Only golden carrots, golden apples and enchanted golden apples make horses breed.

This guide covers Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound, released 15 September 2026) and Bedrock Edition 26.50. Values were checked on 7 October 2026 against the Minecraft Wiki and Mojang’s patch notes.

Made from 9 wheat. Can’t be fed to untamed adult horses

How do you feed a horse in Minecraft?

Hold the food and press the use button on the horse (right-click on PC). The horse eats it and the item is consumed.

If nothing happens, the horse has no use for that food right now. Common causes: a tamed horse at full health in Java, hay bales offered to an untamed adult, or a food that isn’t in the table, like bread or beetroot.

Where do you get horse food in Minecraft?

Most horse food is farmable or craftable. Only the enchanted golden apple has to be found.

•       Sugar: craft it from sugar cane.

•       Wheat: grow it from seeds. Nine wheat craft one hay bale, and hay bales also generate in plains villages, per Beebom’s horse food guide (August 2026).

•       Apples: they drop from oak and dark oak trees, per Beebom.

•       Carrots: village farms, per Beebom.

•       Golden carrots and golden apples: craft them with the recipes in the table.

•       Enchanted golden apple: loot chests only.

What is the best food to heal a horse in Minecraft?

Hay bales. One bale restores 20 HP (10 hearts), more than any other horse food, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

A horse spawns with 15 to 30 HP, so a single bale can cover most of the damage it takes.

A bale costs 9 wheat. Fed one by one, that same wheat heals 18 HP and takes nine right-clicks, so the bale wins on both counts.

Horses also regenerate slowly on their own. The Minecraft Wiki lists a 1 in 900 chance per game tick to regain 1 HP, which works out to about one HP every 45 seconds on average.

For a light scratch, sugar, wheat, apples or carrots are fine. Keep the golden food for taming and breeding.

What do you feed a horse to tame it?

Feed it sugar, wheat, apples, carrots, golden carrots or golden apples to raise its hidden temper, then mount it with an empty hand until hearts appear.

Every wild horse starts at 0 temper out of 100. On your first mount, the game rolls a hidden threshold from 0 to 99.

The horse tames if its temper beats that number. Each time it bucks you off, temper rises by 5, per the Minecraft Wiki.

Food adds temper too: +3 for sugar, wheat, apples and carrots, +5 for a golden carrot, +10 for a golden or enchanted golden apple. One golden apple is worth two failed mounts. Hay bales add nothing.

1.     Find a wild horse in a plains or savanna biome, or in a village stable.

2.     Hold a temper food and press the use button on the horse (right-click on PC). Repeat as often as you like.

3.     Switch to an empty hand and mount the horse. In Java the hand must be empty. In Bedrock you can also hold an item that can’t be used on a horse.

4.     If it bucks you off, feed it again and retry. Hearts above its head mean it’s tamed.

5.     Put a saddle on it so you can steer.

What do horses eat to breed in Minecraft?

Only golden carrots, golden apples and enchanted golden apples start love mode. Feed one to each of two tamed adult horses standing close together and hearts appear over both, per the Minecraft Wiki.

A foal spawns shortly after. Breeding a horse with a donkey gives a mule instead, and mules can’t breed.

A golden carrot needs 8 gold nuggets. A golden apple needs 8 gold ingots. Nine nuggets make one ingot, so a golden apple costs nine times the gold.

Both start love mode exactly the same way, so use golden carrots. Don’t burn an enchanted golden apple on a horse.

How do you make a baby horse grow faster?

Feed the foal any horse food. A foal normally takes 20 minutes to mature, according to the Minecraft Wiki, and each food shaves time off.

Sugar saves 30 seconds, wheat 20 seconds, and apples, carrots and golden carrots 1 minute each. Hay bales save 3 minutes and golden apples 4.

On paper, five golden apples or seven hay bales cover the full 20 minutes.

Can you stop a foal from growing up? The golden dandelion

Yes. A golden dandelion pauses a baby mob’s growth. Mojang added it in Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 (Tiny Takeover), released 24 March 2026.

Craft it with 1 dandelion surrounded by 8 gold nuggets. Use it on a baby horse to freeze its age, and use it again to restart growth. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as a baby-only item for horses.

It isn’t on the horse food table, so it won’t heal anything. Per Mojang’s 26.1 snapshot notes, it can’t be used on hostile baby mobs or villagers.

Do Java and Bedrock feed horses differently?

Slightly. These differences come from the Minecraft Wiki’s horse page, checked 7 October 2026.

•       Java: a tamed horse at full health can’t be fed. In Bedrock it can.

•       Java: a tamed horse at full health can’t be mounted while you hold a food item.

•       Bedrock: feeding a foal doesn’t restore its health.

•       Both: zombie horses and skeleton horses can’t be fed at all.

What do other horse food guides get wrong?

Search results for this topic are full of old or copied claims. Here are the ones that don’t hold up in 26.3.
