Minecraft Farm Guide: What to Build First (Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50)

Which Minecraft farm should you build first? Get a build order, a crop farm walkthrough, and what changed for farms in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50.

Minecraft Farm Guide: What to Build First (Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50)

The best Minecraft farm to build first is a crop farm. It fixes hunger for almost no cost, and the Wheat it makes feeds animal pens and villagers later.

A Minecraft farm is any build that gives you food, items, or XP on repeat. Some are manual, like crops and animal pens. Others run on redstone, villagers, or mob spawning.

This guide is checked against Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 (the Wilderness Bound drop, released September 15, 2026). The information is current as of October 7, 2026, and covers PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile.

What is the best Minecraft farm to build first?

Build a crop farm first, then a sugar cane farm, a mob farm, and an iron farm. If you keep running out of Hoppers, build the iron farm before the mob farm.

Guides disagree on the order. ChampBop’s October 2026 list puts the iron farm first, while minecraft.how (updated October 1, 2026) puts food ahead of iron.

We go food first, because food runs eat your time.

We ranked the farms in this guide by how early you can build them, how much time they save, and how badly they break after updates.

Difficulty is our own rough rating. Beebom (updated

March 2026) calls the iron farm easy, and ChampBop calls it medium.

How do you build a basic Minecraft crop farm?

Till dirt with a Hoe, put one water source in the middle of a 9×9 plot, light it to level 9, and plant. These steps work for Wheat, Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroot.

1.     Craft a Hoe and till grass or dirt into Farmland. Pick flat ground near your base so the farm sits where you spend your time.

2.     Place one water source in the center of a 9×9 plot. According to EnderChest’s farm guide (updated September 16, 2026), Farmland stays hydrated with water within 4 blocks, which is exactly what a 9×9 plot gives you.

3.     Light the plot. EnderChest lists light level 9 or higher as the growth requirement, so add Torches if you farm indoors, underground, or at night.

4.     Plant the crops. The Minecraft Wiki’s crop farming tutorial says Wheat Seeds come from breaking grass. GameSpot’s crop guide notes Carrots and Potatoes are planted directly, and you can find them in villages and chests.

5.     Stay off the Farmland. EnderChest warns that jumping on it turns it back into dirt.

6.     Harvest only fully grown crops. The Minecraft Wiki says Wheat harvested early drops one Seed and no Wheat.

How do you make a crop farm semi-automatic?

Build a long staircase of Farmland that water can flow down, plant it by hand, and flood it from the top when the crops are ready.

EnderChest says the flowing water harvests the crops and pushes them to a collection point.

The design works for Wheat, Carrots, Potatoes, and Beetroot.

EnderChest says it does not work for Melons or Pumpkins, which need Pistons.

How do you make a crop farm fully automatic?

Use a farmer villager. EnderChest says a villager that has claimed a Composter handles the planting, and you add redstone to collect the harvest.

The Minecraft Wiki’s Farmer page says farmers plant and harvest crops on Farmland within about nine blocks of them.

This one needs real redstone knowledge. If you have never built it, start with the semi-automatic version.

What changed for Minecraft farms in 26.3 (Wilderness Bound)?

Wilderness Bound did not add a new farm, but a few changes touch farm builds. These come from the official Java Edition 26.3 patch notes (Mojang, published September 15, 2026).

Bedrock 26.50 shipped the same drop on the same day, with a 26.52 hotfix on September 25, according to MineSpecs’ version tracker. We checked the changes below against the Java notes only.

Change in the official notes

What it means for your farm

Straw Bed: crafted from 3 Hay Bales for 4 beds. Single use, does not set your spawn, destroyed if used in the Nether or End.

EnderChest says 9 Wheat makes a Hay Bale, so 27 Wheat makes 4 Straw Beds. A wheat farm now feeds your exploration kit.

Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs in every color. Cushions are crafted from 3 Wool Slabs.

Builders may want more Wool, and a wool farm is the cheap way to supply it.

Persistent mobs’ random walk and swim behavior now switches off when no player is nearby.

Mojang does not list which mobs count or say it changes output. Watch your pens and villager halls after updating.

New Villager trades from a level-up now update while you are mid-trade.

Trading halls are easier to use. You do not need to close and reopen the trade screen to see new offers.

Endermen no longer teleport onto Bedrock and take projectile damage while riding something.

Re-test enderman farms. Mojang does not say any design breaks, but the behavior changed.

Which Minecraft farms are worth building?

These are the farms most worth your time on Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50. Each pick comes with the reason it earns a slot. We left out per-hour output numbers because none of the guides we read showed how they tested them.

Crop farm

A crop farm solves food for almost nothing. The Minecraft Wiki’s crop tutorial notes that Wheat also lures and breeds cows and Sheep, and since 26.3 it makes the Hay Bales for Straw Beds.

Sugar cane farm

Sugar cane gives you paper for books and villager trades, per EnderChest. Its design uses an Observer that spots the cane growing three blocks tall, which fires Pistons to chop off the upper blocks and leaves the bottom one to regrow.

A minecart with a Hopper then sweeps up the drops. EnderChest says the same design works for bamboo.

Egg farm

An egg farm is one of the easiest automatic farms, according to EnderChest. Lock chickens in a small pen over Hoppers that feed a chest, and throw eggs back into the pen to spawn more chickens.

Short on iron? EnderChest says a 1×1 pen over a single Hopper collects eggs from every chicken inside.

Mob farm

A mob farm is the usual first big build. Beebom describes a dark platform where hostile mobs spawn, with water pushing them to a central hole so the fall weakens them for you to finish.

ChampBop lists Bones (for Bone Meal), String, Arrows, Gunpowder, Rotten Flesh, and some XP as the drops.

Iron farm

The iron farm is the most useful single farm for most players, according to ChampBop (October 2026). It houses villagers near beds so a scare summons Iron Golems, then funnels the golems into a kill zone that drops Iron Ingots and Poppies.

minecraft.how (October 1, 2026) says correct villager and zombie sightlines and cell spacing matter more than how the build looks.

Villager trading hall

A trading hall turns crops and mob drops into enchanted gear. GamersDignity (updated March 2026) describes breeding villagers, giving them jobs with workstations, and resetting trades by breaking and replacing the workstation.

The same guide says curing a Zombie Villager with a splash Weakness potion and a golden apple gets you discounts.

Gold farm

A gold farm runs on Zombified Piglins. ChampBop says it works best on the Nether roof or a large dark platform, with the piglins funneled into a fall chamber. You get Gold Nuggets, Gold Ingots, Rotten Flesh, and a lot of XP.

Beebom rates it best on Java.

Enderman farm

The Enderman farm is the fastest XP farm, per ChampBop. Beebom says it uses an Endermite as bait to pull Endermen into a drop. It also stockpiles Ender Pearls.

You need access to the End, so this is a late-game build.

Raid farm

A raid farm triggers village raids on repeat and funnels the raiders into a kill zone, according to ChampBop. The payoff is Emeralds, Redstone, and Totems of Undying.

minecraft.how says Java raid farm assumptions do not carry cleanly to Bedrock, and that some servers nerf these farms.

Messy chests

Crafter and Copper Golem

EnderChest covers both (see the automation section below).

How do you test your Minecraft farm’s output?

Run it for 15 minutes, count what lands in the chest, and multiply by four. That gives you an items-per-hour number you can trust. minecraft.how recommends a 15-minute test before you decorate.

1.     Empty the collection chests and Hoppers.

2.     Stand at your normal AFK spot. Spawn-based farms depend on where you stand.

3.     Time 15 minutes.

4.     Count the items and multiply by 4.

5.     Write the number down with your game version, then re-test after each drop.

Skip the rates other guides publish.

GamersDignity (updated March 5, 2026) quotes Java iron rates of roughly 350 to 400 Iron Ingots an hour and Bedrock rates of 40 to 80, with no test method.

ChampBop says only that a basic iron farm makes hundreds of ingots an hour.

Why is my Minecraft farm not working?

Check light, distance, and collection first. minecraft.how (October 1, 2026) says most broken farms fail for predictable reasons, and ChampBop says lighting fixes most spawn farm problems.

Crops are not growing

1.     Light is below 9 at the plant. Add Torches.

2.     Water is more than 4 blocks away. Add a water source.

3.     The Farmland turned to dirt. Re-till it and stop jumping on it.

4.     You are too far away. On Java, EnderChest says crops grow only within simulation distance, which is usually shorter than render distance.

5.     You harvested early. Early Wheat drops only a Seed.

Mob, creeper, or gold farm is not spawning

1.     Light up nearby caves and dark spaces. ChampBop says they eat your mob cap, the limit on how many mobs spawn around you.

2.     Stand in range. ChampBop says mobs spawn roughly 24 to 128 blocks from you.

3.     Keep the chunk loaded. Farms only run in loaded chunks, per ChampBop and EnderChest.

4.     Move the farm high up or over an ocean. minecraft.how says that is easier than spawnproofing land caves.

5.     Check collection. minecraft.how says a clogged Hopper line wrecks rates.

Iron farm is not producing

Check villager and zombie sightlines and cell spacing first, since minecraft.how says they matter more than build size. Then confirm your tutorial was made for your edition and version.

Platform-specific notes

•       PC (Java): Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, per the 26.3 patch notes. Check your simulation distance, since it controls what grows.

•       Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile (Bedrock): minecraft.how says Bedrock has different mob spawning and simulation distance defaults than Java. Use builds made for Bedrock.

•       Any platform: treat a tutorial with no edition label as a concept, not a blueprint, per minecraft.how.

Do Minecraft farm designs work on both Java and Bedrock?

Most basic farms work on both. Spawn rules, simulation distance, and some redstone behavior differ, so pick a tutorial that names your edition and version.

How do you automate crafting and sorting for your farms?

Use the Crafter for crafting and the Copper Golem for sorting. EnderChest covers both in its farm guide (updated September 16, 2026).

A Crafter costs 5 Iron Ingots, 1 Crafting Table, 1 Dropper, and 2 Redstone Dust. Feed it with Hoppers, give it a redstone pulse, and it crafts for you.

EnderChest suggests turning Sugar Cane into paper or squeezing Wheat into Hay Bales.

For a Copper Golem, place a Copper Block and put a Carved Pumpkin on top.

EnderChest says it moves up to 16 items at a time from Copper Chests into regular chests that already hold the same item. It arrived in Java 1.21.9.

What is coming for Minecraft farms after 26.3?

Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.70 are targeted for Q4 2026, with no exact date confirmed, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s drop page (October 2026).

Unconfirmed: Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 has experimental ice caves and a Frostbite zombie variant for cold biomes, per Beebom (September 2026).

Nothing farm-specific has been confirmed. Treat it as test content until Mojang publishes final patch notes.
